At Colorado Organic Woods, all custom wood products are organic. But with the word “organic” being thrown around so easily these days, we thought we’d clarify just what that means and the philosophy behind how each piece is made.
what makes the products Organic?
All of the wood comes from David’s family farm in Minnesota, and only trees that have fallen or are already dying are harvested for use. Dave rescues these trees from rotting away, oversees the cutting of the tree into raw lumber, carefully stacks the planks so that they air-dry over a period of years, then brings them to Colorado and begins the process of turning wood into art.
The wood is “minimally processed,” meaning that the boards are treated with loving care. Dave views his role as bringing into view the natural beauty which Mother Nature has created. In essence, he asks each piece of wood, “What do you want to be?” rather than pre-determining an object and then forcing the wood into a particular shape.

How are the pieces finished?
David hand-polishes each piece of wood, performing hundreds of passes along the grain with 5 to 7 successively finer grades of sandpaper to bring out its distinctly unique beauty. Instead of altering the wood with harsh chemicals, the pieces are elevated to a fine quality that can be crafted into several different types of products for various uses. Minimal alterations leave the natural woodgrain intact. No stains are ever used, and all finishes are natural and organic. The serving and charcuterie boards are finished with a combination of food-grade mineral oil and natural food-safe waxes.
